india Achieves Record Growth in Clean Energy Capacity in 2025

India achieved a landmark year in clean energy in 2025, with non-fossil fuel installed capacity rising to 266.78 GW—a 22.6% increase over 2024—Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Saturday. The country added 49.12 GW of new capacity, reflecting accelerated growth in renewable energy deployment.

Solar and wind led the expansion, with solar capacity surging 38.8% from 97.86 GW to 135.81 GW, and wind capacity rising 13.2% from 48.16 GW to 54.51 GW. Bioenergy reached 11.61 GW, including 0.55 GW from waste-to-energy projects, while small hydro rose to 5.16 GW and large hydro stood at 50.91 GW, including 7.18 GW of pumped storage to support grid stability.

Joshi highlighted that this record growth reflects strong policy leadership, long-term vision, and sustained implementation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reinforcing India’s commitment to energy security, climate responsibility, and a self-reliant green economy. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy plans to work with states and stakeholders to accelerate progress toward India’s 2030 target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity.
