Delhi batter Ayush Badoni has earned his maiden ODI call-up, joining the Indian squad for the second and third ODIs against New Zealand after all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out due to a rib injury sustained during the first match at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. Sundar had experienced acute discomfort in his left lower rib while bowling, forcing him to leave the field after five overs for 27 runs, though he later came out to bat at No. 8 and contributed an unbeaten 27-run partnership with KL Rahul as India chased down 306.
With Sundar sidelined for the remainder of the three-match series, Badoni will link up with the squad in Rajkot ahead of the second ODI. Sundar is the third Indian player to be ruled out by injury this home season, following Rishabh Pant (side strain) and Tilak Varma (groin surgery).
During the chase, KL Rahul noted that he was unaware of the severity of Sundar’s injury and praised his composure in rotating strike despite discomfort. India’s updated squad for the final two ODIs now includes Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Shreyas Iyer (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (WK), and Ayush Badoni.
