Iran Supreme Leader Defiant Amid Protests and US Pressure
Iran’s Supreme LeaderAyatollah Ali Khameneisaid in a televised statement that the countrywill not yield to foreign pressureand warned that those causing unrest would bedealt with firmly. The remarks come as protests over economic hardship and the collapsing rial have swept across the country, particularly in western provinces, leavingmore than 10 people deadand dozens detained.
Authorities have taken adual approach, allowing peaceful demonstrations while using force against violent unrest. Khamenei acknowledged traders’ concerns about the economy but said dialogue with rioters is pointless.
The unrest coincides withUS warningsof possible action, adding pressure on Tehran amid sanctions, economic instability, and a regional strategic setback following Israeli and US strikes on Iranian allies and nuclear facilities. Rights groups report continued arrests and clashes, highlighting the growing domestic challenge for the Iranian government since the major protests of 2022.
