The Government of India has announced that the houselisting phase of Census 2027 will be conducted across the country from April 1 to September 30, 2026. This exercise, which forms the first stage of the decennial population census, will cover all States and Union Territories, aiming to create a comprehensive database of households and their basic demographic details.
During houselisting, enumerators will visit every residential unit to collect information about the number of members in each household, their age, gender, occupation, and other key socio-economic indicators. The data gathered will serve as the foundation for the main population enumeration, scheduled to follow in the next phase.
Authorities have emphasised that this operation is crucial for planning and implementing public policies, infrastructure development, and resource allocation at both the central and state levels. Citizens are urged to cooperate with census officials and provide accurate information, as the collected data will help shape the country’s socio-economic strategies for the coming decade.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is coordinating the process, ensuring that proper training, technology, and safety protocols are in place for enumerators, particularly in the context of ongoing health and logistical considerations. This systematic approach is intended to make Census 2027 the most accurate and inclusive count of India’s population to date.
