High-Tech Ventilation to SOS Alerts: What Makes Tunnel-7 of Khordha Road–Bolangir Rail Line Safer

East Coast Railway has installed advanced safety and emergency systems in Tunnel No. 7 of the Khordha Road–Bolangir Rail Line in Boudh district, strengthening railway safety and connectivity in Odisha.

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has completed the installation of state-of-the-art safety and emergency management systems in Tunnel No. 7 of the Khordha Road–Bolangir Rail Line project, marking a significant step toward ensuring safe and passenger-centric railway operations in Odisha.

Tunnel-7, measuring 1,975 metres, is located between Purunakatak and Charichhak in Boudh district. After achieving a successful breakthrough, authorities shifted focus to equipping the tunnel with advanced safety infrastructure in compliance with prescribed railway safety standards.

Focus on Safety and Emergency Preparedness

The tunnel has been developed with meticulous engineering, placing strong emphasis on structural stability, fire safety, ventilation efficiency, electrical reliability, and emergency response systems. Advanced Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems have been installed as per approved designs and are currently undergoing testing and commissioning.

Key Safety Features Installed

  • High-capacity ventilation system with jet fans to maintain air quality and control smoke during emergencies.

  • Comprehensive fire-fighting systems including hydrant lines, hose reels, and strategically placed fire extinguishers.

  • Tunnel lighting and automatic emergency lighting system with power backup and illuminated exit signage.

  • Public Address (PA) system and CCTV surveillance for real-time communication and continuous monitoring.

  • Boost to Odisha Connectivity

Officials stated that all systems have been thoroughly checked, with functional testing underway and commissioning to be completed in phases. The Khordha Road–Bolangir Rail Line Project is one of Odisha’s most significant connectivity initiatives, aimed at bridging the long-standing infrastructure gap between coastal and western Odisha.

  • SOS emergency calling system enabling direct contact with the control room from within the tunnel.

  • Linear Heat Detection System (LHDS) for continuous temperature monitoring and early fire detection.

  • Advanced ballastless (slab) track technology ensuring better alignment, reduced maintenance, and enhanced operational reliability—especially suited for tunnel sections.
