The Gujarat government has introduced proposed amendments to its marriage registration rules that would require couples to inform authorities whether their parents are aware of their marriage. Applicants must submit detailed parental information, including Aadhaar and contact details, and officials will notify parents within ten working days of the application.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said the changes aim to prevent fraudulent marriages and cases involving fake identities, often linked to allegations of “love jihad.” The government stated it is not against love marriages but wants to prevent deceit.
However, the proposal has triggered legal and public debate because the Supreme Court, especially in the Hadiya case, ruled that the right to choose a partner is part of personal liberty under Article 21. Critics argue the amendments may violate individual autonomy and privacy. The government has invited public feedback before taking a final decision.
