Burglars looted gold ornaments worth over Rs 20 lakh after breaking through a wall of a jewellery shop in Odisha’s Balasore district. Police have launched an investigation to trace the miscreants.

In a major burglary incident, gold ornaments worth more than Rs 20 lakh were looted from a jewellery shop in Odisha’s Balasore district late on Monday night. The theft was reported from a jewellery store located at Fata Arjun Chhak under the jurisdiction of Soro police station.

According to official sources, the shop owner, Rajendra Sahu, had locked the shop and left for home at night. When he returned the next morning, he noticed a hole in the wall of the shop. The burglars had allegedly entered through the opening and decamped with all the gold ornaments kept inside the store.

The shop owner claimed that gold jewellery worth over Rs 20 lakh was stolen in the incident. He also stated that more than five kilograms of silver jewellery were kept in the shop. The miscreants reportedly broke open the locker, the key to which had been kept in the cash box.

Speaking to the media, Rajendra Sahu said, “Last night, I had locked the shop before leaving for home and kept all valuables in the locker. When I reached the shop the next morning, I found that the gold ornaments had been looted.”

On receiving information, Soro police immediately reached the spot and initiated a detailed investigation. Police officials are examining the scene, collecting evidence and verifying possible leads to identify and trace the culprits involved in the burglary.

The incident has raised concerns among local traders, while police assured that all efforts are being made to solve the case at the earliest.
