Is Your Glass Straw Making You Sick? The Dark Side of Eco-Friendly Sips

Glass straws may add an aesthetic touch to your drink, but they could come with hidden risks. Popular for their eco-friendly appeal and stylish look, these accessories can pose potential health hazards that many users are unaware of.

Glass straws have become a symbol of sustainability and aesthetic living, especially in cafés and on social media. Transparent, stylish and reusable, they are often seen as a cleaner and more eco-friendly alternative to plastic or paper straws. But behind their elegant appearance lies a lesser-known risk.

As plastic straws were phased out, reusable options such as steel, bamboo, silicone and glass quickly gained popularity. Glass straws, in particular, stood out because they do not alter the taste of beverages and appear hygienic since users can see through them. However, medical experts warn that they are not as harmless as they seem.

Several social media users have shared alarming experiences involving glass straws. In one widely viewed video, a woman described how her glass straw broke while she was drinking water, causing her to swallow a fragment that later required medical intervention. According to Dr P Venkata Krishnan, senior consultant in internal medicine at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram, glass straws can crack or shatter if bitten, dropped, or exposed to sudden temperature changes. Even hairline cracks, which may go unnoticed, can injure the lips, tongue or inside of the mouth.

While such incidents are rare, the injuries can be serious. The risks are higher for children, who may bite or play with straws, and for older adults, who may have weaker grip strength or slower reflexes. Accidents are also more likely in outdoor settings, while travelling, or at social gatherings where drinks can be easily knocked over.

Experts advise that occasional use of glass straws is generally safe, but they are not ideal for everyday or careless use. Safer alternatives include stainless steel straws with silicone tips, flexible silicone straws, bamboo straws and durable reusable plastic straws. These options offer sustainability without the added risk of breakage.

The takeaway is not to avoid glass straws entirely, but to use them thoughtfully. Choosing the right reusable straw for the situation can help balance eco-conscious choices with personal safety.
