Odisha Mining Department Cracks Down on Illegal Morum Extraction in Ganjam Following ED Raids
In the wake of recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids, the Odisha Mining Department has intensified action against illegal mining activities in Ganjam district. A joint operation by Berhampur–Digapahandi mining authorities and local police resulted in the seizure of a JCB machine and three tractors involved in the unauthorised transportation of morum (gravelly soil).
Targeted Raid Based on Specific IntelligenceOfficials said the crackdown was initiated after receiving intelligence about round-the-clock illegal extraction and transport of morum from Gautami hill in Sanakhemundi block. During the operation, authorities found heavy machinery being used for digging morum without valid government permissions.
Machinery and Vehicles SeizedThe enforcement action led to the confiscation of one JCB machine and three tractors loaded with illegally extracted morum. Reports indicated that two additional JCB machines had been deployed at the site over the previous two days. The raid was conducted late Sunday night following complaints from local sources.
Investigation OngoingThe mining department, in coordination with police, has launched a detailed probe to determine the full scale of the illegal operation, including any additional machinery or vehicles involved. Officials warned that strict action will be taken against all violators under prevailing mining and environmental laws.
Government Reiterates Zero ToleranceThe crackdown follows a warning from Odisha Steel and Mines Minister, emphasizing zero tolerance for illegal mining and sand mafia activities. Authorities have confirmed that similar enforcement drives will continue across the district to curb unauthorised extraction and transportation of mineral resources.
