Galgotias University, located in Greater Noida, faced online criticism after a viral video alleged that it had developed an AI-powered robotic dog named “Orion.” The robot was showcased during the India AI Impact Summit, leading many to believe it was an indigenous innovation.
In response, the university clarified that the robotic dog was actually the Unitree Go2, purchased from Unitree, a robotics firm based in China. The institution emphasised that the robot was acquired as a teaching and research tool to give students hands-on experience with advanced AI and robotics.
However, controversy continued after a community fact-check note claimed the university had previously presented the robot as its own development and named it “Orion.” Critics accused the university of misrepresenting imported technology as a local innovation.
The university defended its actions, stating that its goal was to expose students to global technologies and inspire innovation. It added that learning from international tools is essential to help students develop future-ready skills and create original solutions.
