Preparations for the grand Rath Yatra are progressing steadily as the fourth consignment of timber reached Puri on Sunday night.
The latest batch, transported from the Madhopur range under the Boudh forest division, included 52 pieces of wood—37 logs of 12 feet and 15 logs of 20 feet. This marks another step in the phased delivery of timber required for chariot construction.
The construction of the three chariots for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra involves traditional craftsmanship. Around 12 types of wood such as Dharua, Phasi, and Asana are used. In total, nearly 1,100 large logs and 865 smaller logs are shaped into approximately 4,000 components using traditional tools like Mugdara mallets and Barishi axes.
The chariots are also known for their vibrant decorations, featuring about 1,090 metres of Pipili appliqué cloth. Each chariot follows a distinct colour scheme—red and yellow for Lord Jagannath, green and red for Lord Balabhadra, and red and black for Goddess Subhadra.
The continued arrival of timber consignments ensures that construction activities remain on schedule, maintaining centuries-old traditions ahead of the festival.
