Distressing videos of former Nickelodeon actor Tylor Chase went viral recently, showing himhomeless, disoriented, and visibly unwell on the streets of Riverside, California. Fans were shocked to see the child star from Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide struggling to survive, prompting an outpouring of concern online. The videos reached Chase’s former co-star Daniel Curtis Lee, who played Simon 'Cookie' Nelson-Cook. Moved by the footage, Lee traveled to Riverside to help. Videos shared online show him feeding Chase, arranging basic medical attention, and providing emotional support, briefly rekindling the bond they shared on set.
Lee also secured temporary accommodation for Chase at a local motel, hoping to provide warmth, safety, and stability during the winter. The gesture was widely praised as an act of compassion.
Tragically, the relief was short-lived. Within hours, motel staff reported the room had been severely damaged, with furniture overturned and appliances displaced. Chase was asked to leave, ending the temporary shelter Lee had arranged.
The incident left Lee heartbroken, as he admitted that despite his efforts, he could not provide the long-term help Chase clearly needed.
Following the motel incident, Chase returned to living on the streets, highlighting the complexity of homelessness. Lee emphasized that situations involving severe mental health struggles require more than food or shelter; support cannot be forced if the individual is unwilling or unable to accept it.
Chase reportedly struggles with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use issues, with previous attempts at treatment either discontinued or rejected.
Former child actor Shaun Weiss offered help for rehabilitation, but Chase has resisted long-term care.
Chase’s story illustrates the limits of short-term interventions and the importance of structured, long-term mental health and housing support. It also reflects the struggles faced by countless unhoused individuals, showing that viral attention alone cannot solve deep-rooted crises.
As of now, Tylor Chase remains on the streets. Yet the compassion shown by Lee and others has sparked conversations about how society addresses mental health crises, homelessness, and support for vulnerable individuals.
