As dawn broke on Makar Sankranti, the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj—where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati converge—turned into a massive sea of devotees, with faith drawing crowds on a scale rarely seen even during the Magh Mela. An estimated 10.3 million pilgrims took the sacred dip, marking the second major bathing festival of Magh Mela 2026, reinforcing Prayagraj’s central role in India’s ritual calendar. A day earlier, on Ekadashi, around 8.5 million devotees had participated, setting the stage for the massive turnout on Makar Sankranti.
Makar Sankranti is a key event in Hindu tradition, marking the sun’s transition into Capricorn. Bathing at the Sangam on this day is believed to wash away sins and open the path to liberation, prompting devotees to travel from across India and abroad. From early morning, pilgrims queued along designated ghats, chanting prayers as they awaited their turn, and the rituals concluded peacefully despite the enormous crowd.
To manage the unprecedented footfall, the Uttar Pradesh administration deployed extensive security and crowd management measures. Senior police and civil officials, including ADG Jyoti Narayan, IG Ajay Mishra, Divisional Commissioner Saumya Agrawal, Prayagraj Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar, and District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, oversaw the arrangements, ensuring smooth traffic, crowd flow, and safety throughout the day.
Transport services were strengthened to ease congestion, with the Rapido bike service helping more than 11,500 pilgrims navigate crowded routes on Makar Sankranti alone, and over 138,500 pilgrims transported since the mela began. In addition to logistics, officials focused on cultural gestures, distributing traditional khichdi prasad to devotees at multiple points, adding to the festive and spiritual atmosphere surrounding the sacred bath.
