In a tragic incident in Godigaon, Khunta police limits of Mayurbhanj district, Kanhu Madhei was allegedly beaten to death for acting as an eyewitness in the murder case of Bapi Kolhar. Last November, Kanhu and Bapi were reportedly caught attempting to steal a gas cylinder and were assaulted by villagers, resulting in Bapi’s death. Kanhu was later jailed in the theft case and released on bail.
After appearing in court to testify in Bapi Kolhar’s murder case, Kanhu reportedly had an altercation with relatives of the accused. Subsequently, five youths allegedly chased and brutally assaulted him in the village. CCTV footage captured the attack, leading police to identify and detain prime accused Dularam Murmu, while efforts continue to apprehend the others involved.
The Khunta Police have confirmed that a detailed probe is underway to ensure justice in the fatal assault, which underscores the risks faced by witnesses in sensitive criminal cases.
