A dramatic rescue operation unfolded at Banajodi village in the Sadar range of Keonjhar after a male Asian elephant accidentally fell into a functioning well nearly 30 feet deep.
The incident occurred in the middle of a densely populated area, creating panic among local residents and prompting an immediate response from the Odisha Forest Department, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services, and the Odisha Police.
According to officials, the elephant had reportedly wandered into the village in search of food before accidentally falling into the deep well. Initially, rescuers considered building an inclined ramp to allow the animal to climb out. However, the plan was dropped due to the risk that the well’s surrounding walls could collapse under the pressure.
Instead, the rescue team decided to apply a method based on Archimedes' Principle, which explains how objects float in fluid. Large quantities of water were poured into the well to gradually raise the water level, allowing the elephant to float upward.
Though the approach carried some risk, including the possibility of drowning, rescuers carefully monitored the situation throughout the operation to ensure the animal’s safety. After several hours of coordinated efforts, the elephant was successfully brought out of the well.
The rescue drew relief and applause from villagers who had gathered at the site. Officials later guided the elephant back toward the nearby forest area. Authorities said the operation demonstrated effective teamwork and quick decision-making among the forest, fire, and police departments during a challenging wildlife rescue.
