Flight operations at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar were severely affected on Thursday morning as dense fog engulfed the region, significantly reducing visibility and disrupting air traffic. On the first day of the New Year, only one flight managed to depart, while multiple others remained grounded due to unsafe flying conditions.
According to airport sources, visibility dropped to less than 50 metres in several parts of the city, making aircraft movement extremely challenging. The foggy conditions affected both arrivals and departures, with many flights either delayed or placed on hold as a precautionary measure.
Airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, confirmed operational disruptions and advised passengers to check flight schedules before heading to the airport. Flights bound for northern destinations were among the worst affected, as visibility conditions remained poor throughout the morning.
Passengers were seen waiting for hours inside the terminal as flight schedules remained uncertain. Airport staff and airline officials worked to manage the situation, providing updates as weather conditions evolved. Several travellers expressed frustration over delays but acknowledged safety concerns due to the low visibility.
The disruption at the airport coincided with widespread fog conditions across Odisha. Districts including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul and Deogarh experienced dense fog, severely affecting road and air traffic.
Meteorological authorities stated that fog conditions may persist during early morning hours over the next few days, advising commuters and travellers to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories.
