The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed a sessions court order that had put a halt on the bail granted to Uday Bhanu Chib, president of the Indian Youth Congress, in connection with the AI summit protest case.
A bench led by Justice Saurabh Banerjee questioned the absence of reasoning in the sessions court’s interim order, observing that any judicial direction must reflect application of mind. The high court noted that the lower court failed to clearly record findings while terming the case “rare and exceptional.”
Chib was arrested after a shirtless protest staged by Youth Congress workers during the India AI Impact Summit on February 20. Protesters reportedly entered the venue carrying T-shirts with images of Narendra Modi and Donald Trump, along with political slogans. Police alleged that protesters scuffled with security personnel at the event.
Following the high court’s stay order, Chib’s counsel indicated that he was likely to be released after receiving the physical copy of the judgment.
