As over 40 lakh students entered examination halls across India for the 2026 board cycle, the spotlight was not only on Mathematics or Physics papers but also on the sweeping structural reforms introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, the new system promises flexibility and reduced exam stress. However, for many families, the implementation has triggered confusion rather than clarity.
Under the revised framework:
Class 10 students now gettwo board exam opportunitiesin one academic year.
TheFebruary exam is mandatory.
Asecond exam in May–Juneis optional for improvement or compartment clearance.
Thebetter scoremay be considered.
Internal assessments are conducted once but apply to both attempts.
On paper, this appears student-friendly. In reality, students and parents are struggling to decode terms like “First Chance Improvement,” “Compartment with Improvement Overlap,” and “Essential Repeat.”
Earlier, board exam pressure lasted about a month. Now, students may experience a prolonged cycle:
February: First board attempt
April: Results
May–June: Improvement exams
July: Revised results
What was once a short-term high-stakes event has evolved into a semester-long psychological process. School counsellors note that instead of eliminating pressure, the dual-exam structure may have extended it.
1. Mandatory First Attempt ParadoxThough marketed as flexible, the first exam remains compulsory. Missing subjects could lead to “essential repeat” status, creating a contradiction between flexibility and compulsion.
2. Administrative ComplexityMultiple eligibility categories have made the system harder to understand. Parents report relying on several circulars to interpret rules correctly.
3. Digital Evaluation Shift (Class 12)CBSE has introduced on-screen marking (OSM) for faster evaluation. While technologically progressive, educators highlight concerns regarding teacher training and system adaptation timelines.
4. Competency-Based QuestionsThe board has increased competency-based questions to encourage conceptual understanding. However, classroom pedagogy has not fully transitioned from rote-based teaching, leading to a gap between instruction and assessment.
Education analysts suggest that implementing exam pattern changes, digital evaluation, and attempt restructuring simultaneously has created “reform overload.”
Students, too, voice concern. Many feel they are part of ongoing policy experimentation, adjusting to structural changes every few years. While NEP 2020 envisioned flexibility, critics argue that administrative complexity may have overshadowed its intent.
CBSE’s reforms aim to dismantle the one-shot, high-stakes exam culture. Yet, as exam season unfolds, a pressing question remains:
Has the board reduced stress — or redistributed it across notifications, eligibility clauses, and second chances?
As answer sheets fill across the country, families continue navigating not just exams, but an evolving policy landscape that may itself need refinement.
