In a significant move to improve pedestrian safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday announced the construction of a 500-metre-long skywalk along the busy Palasuni–Rasulgarh stretch of National Highway 16 in Bhubaneswar.
The ambitious infrastructure project, estimated to cost around Rs 20 crore, was confirmed by the NHAI Regional Office in Odisha.
The Palasuni–Rasulgarh corridor is one of the most congested entry points into Bhubaneswar and witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day. The stretch has long been considered accident-prone, especially for pedestrians attempting to cross the highway amid fast-moving traffic.
Officials stated that the proposed skywalk will provide a safe and dedicated passage for pedestrians, significantly reducing the risk of road accidents. By separating pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic, the project aims to enhance both safety and traffic discipline.
The skywalk initiative forms part of NHAI’s broader strategy to strengthen road safety infrastructure and streamline traffic flow along NH-16, a key arterial highway connecting multiple districts of Odisha.
For years, local residents and daily commuters have demanded safer pedestrian crossings in the Palasuni–Rasulgarh area. The upcoming skywalk is expected to address these concerns while contributing to improved urban mobility standards in the capital city.
