Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple Row Intensifies, EO Faces Official Complaint

Tensions at Bhubaneswar’s Lingaraj Temple have escalated, with police now involved. Amarendra Garabadu has filed a formal complaint against the temple’s Executive Officer.

The ongoing dispute at Bhubaneswar’s iconic Lingaraj Temple has taken a more serious turn, drawing police attention and sparking public concern over administrative lapses. The controversy centers around the ‘Kheera Aauta’ ritual, during which two temple servitors were assigned duties that reportedly led to confusion and conflict. As a result of this mismanagement, it is alleged that Lord Lingaraj was forced to remain on a fast for two consecutive days during the Makar Sankranti festival, an unusual and concerning situation that drew the ire of devotees.

Amarendra Garabadu, a resident of Old Bhubaneswar, formally lodged a complaint at the Lingaraj police station against the temple’s Executive Officer, Rudranarayan Mohanty. In his complaint, Garabadu accused the officer of negligence in performing his administrative responsibilities, claiming that had proper action been taken, the duties of the servitors could have been effectively divided, ensuring smooth conduct of the rituals. He emphasized that this was not an isolated incident, noting that similar disruptions had occurred in 2025, indicating a recurring problem in temple management.

Garabadu expressed confidence that the authorities would take steps to address the issue and restore proper functioning of the temple rituals. He also made it clear that he is prepared to escalate the matter to the High Court if necessary to ensure accountability and justice, underscoring the seriousness with which he views the Executive Officer’s role in the incident.

Temple authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Observers and devotees alike have pointed out that repeated conflicts among temple servitors and administrative lapses highlight the urgent need for improved management and oversight at Lingaraj Temple. Without proper coordination and supervision, such disputes threaten not only the smooth conduct of sacred rituals but also the faith and trust of devotees who come to participate in these religious traditions.

The incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required in managing one of Odisha’s most revered temples, where even minor administrative oversights can have significant spiritual and public repercussions.
