Bharatpur police in Bhubaneswar arrested a man in connection with an alleged cheating case involving Rs 31 lakh, which was reportedly taken on the promise of providing land. The arrest was made on Thursday following a complaint lodged by a woman who claimed she was cheated during a proposed land transaction.
According to the complaint, the woman came in contact with Kumuda Pradhan, a resident of the Bharatpur police station area. He allegedly introduced his father-in-law, Bisikeshan Pradhan, as a land seller and assured the complainant that a plot of land would be provided at a lower price in Gobindpur mouza.
Believing the assurance, the complainant agreed to purchase the land and proceeded with the transaction as advised by the accused.
As per the complaint, the woman paid the agreed amount through bank transactions as well as in cash. However, despite receiving the full payment, the accused allegedly failed to complete the registration of the land in her favour.
When the complainant repeatedly requested either the registration of the land or the return of her money, the accused allegedly did not comply.The complaint further alleged that when the woman demanded a refund, she and her family members were verbally abused and threatened by the accused. Following this, she approached Bharatpur police and lodged a formal complaint seeking legal action.
After examining the complaint and carrying out an investigation, Bharatpur police arrested Bisikeshan Pradhan in connection with the case. He was later produced before a local court on Thursday, official sources said.
