AR Rahman Breaks Silence on “Communal” Remark Controversy, Says He Has Moved On

AR Rahman addressed the controversy surrounding his remarks about a possible “communal” atmosphere in the Hindi film industry, stating that he has clarified his position and chosen to move on. The composer emphasised that he has not faced direct discrimination and believes industry power dynamics have shifted, while actor Rani Mukerji responded by calling the film industry secular and inclusive.

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has once again addressed the controversy that arose after his remarks hinted at a possible “communal” atmosphere within the Hindi film industry. The comments, made during an interview earlier, sparked widespread debate and reactions across social media and the film fraternity, prompting Rahman to issue a clarification soon after.

Speaking recently on the Noise and Grains podcast, Rahman reflected on the backlash and explained why he chose not to dwell on the issue further. Emphasising personal growth and preparedness in life, the composer said that people who truly know him do not require explanations, while those unwilling to listen would not be convinced regardless. He added that it was healthier to move on rather than continue engaging with the controversy.

In a separate interview with BBC Asian Network, Rahman discussed the noticeable decline in his Hindi film projects over the past few years. While clarifying that he has not faced any direct hostility, the composer suggested that the change could be linked to shifting power dynamics within the film industry. According to Rahman, decision-making is increasingly influenced by non-creative forces, which may have affected the kind of opportunities coming his way.

Addressing speculation about discrimination, Rahman noted that if such factors exist, they have remained subtle and behind the scenes. He described situations where projects were allegedly offered to him but later assigned to multiple other composers by music companies. However, he maintained a philosophical outlook, stating that he does not chase work and prefers to let opportunities come to him organically, allowing him more time with his family.

Reacting to Rahman’s remarks, actor Rani Mukerji stated that the Hindi film industry operates in a secular and inclusive manner, highlighting that it does not function on the basis of discrimination. Her comments added another perspective to the ongoing discussion, as industry voices weighed in on the issue.

Despite the controversy, Rahman made it clear that he remains focused on his craft, personal peace, and creative integrity, choosing to leave the debate behind and move forward.
