In the wake of multiple accidents involving Ama Bus services in Bhubaneswar, the Transport Department has stepped up vigilance and formed a five-member high-level committee to enhance monitoring and improve passenger safety. A key review meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Transport Department Principal Secretary Usha Padhee.
The newly formed committee, comprising the Transport Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Traffic DCP, and a senior official from CRUT, will meet every 15 days to assess the functioning of Ama Bus services. Emergency meetings may also be convened to address urgent issues and ensure swift corrective action.
Several crucial decisions were taken during the meeting, including allowing only drivers who clear mandatory screening tests to operate Ama Bus services. The department has also decided to issue e-challans against Ama Bus drivers found violating traffic rules.
Additionally, third-party screening tests will be introduced for drivers, and only those who successfully pass these assessments will be permitted to drive. Drivers failing the tests will be barred from operating buses. To promote responsible driving behavior, the department announced incentives for drivers who display higher levels of discipline and sensitivity.
The move follows a fatal road accident involving an Ama Bus at Rupali Square two days ago, which raised serious concerns over road safety and prompted authorities to implement immediate corrective measures.
