Kendrapara woman alleges in-laws tried to burn her alive for giving birth to girl child

A woman in Kendrapara district has accused her in-laws of attempting to burn her alive over the birth of a girl child. Police have launched an investigation as the accused family members deny the allegations.

A disturbing case of alleged domestic violence has come to light from Damarapur village under Pattamundai Rural police station limits in Odisha’s Kendrapara district. The victim, Sasmita Das, has accused her in-laws of attempting to burn her alive late at night after she gave birth to a girl child.

According to Sasmita, her father-in-law allegedly poured petrol and set her bed on fire while she was asleep, burning several household items in the room. She claimed she narrowly escaped death and alleged sustained physical and mental harassment by her in-laws for giving birth to daughters. The accused family, however, has denied the allegations, offering a different account of the incident. Police have taken cognisance of the matter and initiated an investigation to establish the facts.
