A controversy erupted during Republic Day celebrations at a government high school in Bhatigawan village of Maihar district after students were served halwa and puris on sheets torn from old notebooks instead of proper plates. Videos showing children eating food placed on paper while sitting on the ground quickly circulated on social media, triggering widespread concern over hygiene standards and school management practices.
Following public backlash, district authorities acted swiftly. In-charge principal Sushil Kumar Tripathi was suspended with immediate effect for alleged negligence in organising the special Republic Day lunch. Rewa Division Commissioner B S Jamod confirmed the suspension, while Maihar Collector Rani Batad ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
The principal has been temporarily attached to the District Education Officer’s office during the investigation. Officials stressed that such arrangements fall far short of the standards expected in government schools, particularly during national celebrations.
Parents and community members expressed disappointment, emphasising that student welfare and dignity must remain a priority. Education officials have assured that corrective measures will be taken and that future school events will adhere to proper hygiene and safety norms. The ongoing probe aims to identify all those responsible and prevent similar incidents going forward.
