Trump said the United States “needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security,” calling the Arctic island essential for the Golden Dome missile defence system currently being planned. Writing on Truth Social, he warned that rivals such as Russia and China are already eyeing Greenland’s strategic position and insisted that US control would significantly strengthenNATO.
According to Trump, Greenland’s geography would allow better surveillance, early-warning systems and defence coverage across the Arctic and North Atlantic — areas increasingly important in modern warfare.
TheGolden Domeis a proposed next-generation US missile defence project announced by Trump in May last year. Estimated to cost around$175 billion, it is designed to shield the American mainland from emerging military threats posed by rivals like China and Russia.
The initiative is being led by US Space Force GeneralMichael Guetleinand is often compared to former US president Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, also known as “Star Wars” — but updated with modern space and AI technology.
At its core, Golden Dome is aspace-based missile defence system. It would rely on hundreds of satellites orbiting Earth to:

Intercept or neutralise missiles soon after launch
Unlike traditional missile defence systems, Golden Dome is designed to counterhypersonic glide vehicles, cruise missiles and AI-enabled drone swarms, which are faster and harder to intercept.
While Trump has compared it to Israel’s Iron Dome, defence experts say Golden Dome is far more expansive, operating across land, sea, air and space as a layered “system of systems.”
Greenland sits at a strategic crossroads between North America, Europe and the Arctic. Its location makes it ideal for:

Monitoring Russian and Chinese military activity
Trump argues that placing Greenland under US control would dramatically enhance Nato’s defensive reach and ensure Washington maintains dominance in the rapidly militarising Arctic region.
Trump has said he wants the Golden Dome operational byJanuary 2029, before the end of his current term. However, the project’s enormous cost, technical complexity and geopolitical implications — especially regarding Greenland’s status under Denmark — are expected to spark intense debate in the US Congress and among America’s allies.
For now, Golden Dome represents one of the most ambitious missile defence visions in US history, with Greenland emerging once again as a focal point of global strategic rivalry.
