IPL Broadcast Suspended in Bangladesh Amid Mustafizur Rahman Controversy

The Bangladesh government has ordered an immediate halt to the broadcast and digital streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) across the country, following widespread public anger over fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman’s removal from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for the 2026 season. The suspension will remain in effect until further notice, preventing Bangladeshi viewers from accessing IPL matches through official platforms.

The directive, issued on Monday afternoon, cited public discontent after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed KKR to release Rahman, without providing a satisfactory explanation. The decision reportedly intensified public outrage, prompting authorities to stop all IPL telecasts and related programming in the interest of national sentiment.

Rahman, a 30-year-old left-arm pacer acquired by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore at the mini-auction, was released from the squad in compliance with the BCCI’s directive. As per IPL regulations, KKR now has the option to sign a replacement player.

Diplomatic Fallout and International Implications
The controversy has spilled beyond cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reportedly urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches out of India. The ICC is reportedly considering adjustments that could see Bangladesh play all Group C fixtures in Sri Lanka instead of the scheduled venues in Kolkata and Mumbai.

The incident comes amid broader diplomatic tensions, including recent attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which have further complicated sporting relations between the two neighbouring countries. The Mustafizur Rahman episode, initially a franchise-level issue, has now evolved into a significant sporting and diplomatic standoff, affecting broadcasting, tournament logistics, and international cricket administration.
