The Indian rupee rose 18 paise to 90.12 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, buoyed by a weaker greenback and a decline in global crude oil prices.
However, sharp gains were capped due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks on tariffs on India, ongoing FII outflows, and sustained weak sentiment in domestic equity markets, according to forex traders.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 90.22 against the U.S. dollar and strengthened to 90.12, up 18 paise from its previous close. On Monday, January 5, the rupee had remained weak for the fourth consecutive session, closing 10 paise lower at 90.30, as heightened geopolitical uncertainty boosted the greenback’s appeal.
“Trump threatened India with additional tariffs if it did not align with U.S. demands on Russian oil purchases. The rupee continues to face pressure from these threats, and there is a strong possibility of it returning to 91 levels if a trade deal does not materialize soon,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.
The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against six major currencies, was trading 0.04% higher at 98.22. Bhansali noted, “The U.S. dollar index had fallen to 98.31 after the ISM Manufacturing PMI came in at 47.9, lower than expected, signaling potential rate cuts amid a slowing U.S. economy.”
Global crude benchmark Brent was down 0.31% at $61.57 per barrel in futures trading.
In domestic equities, the Sensex fell 431.95 points to 85,007.67, while the Nifty dropped 105.6 points to 26,144.70 in early trade. Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹36.25 crore on Monday, January 5, according to exchange data.
Meanwhile, President Trump announced that the U.S. had carried out a military operation in Venezuela, removing President Nicolas Maduro, and said the country’s vast oil reserves would be tapped for sale to other nations.
