Boat Services in Odisha’s Chilika Lake Suspended Till 11 am Daily Amid Dense Fog, Ferry Tragedy

The Puri district administration has suspended all boat and ferry services in Chilika Lake until 11 am each day following dense fog conditions that severely reduced visibility. The decision comes after a fatal ferry incident in which a passenger lost his life after falling into the lake during disrupted operations.

The Puri district administration has imposed a daily suspension on all boat and ferry services in Chilika Lake until 11 am, citing dense fog and poor visibility that pose serious risks to navigation. The order will remain in force until weather conditions improve.

The decision follows a tragic incident in which a passenger ferry operating on the Satapada–Jahnikuda route was stranded mid-lake due to heavy fog. During the disruption, a passenger reportedly fell into the water and later died. Officials confirmed that the victim, identified as Uma Shankar Sabat of Berhampur, had boarded the ferry before the incident occurred.

According to authorities, the ferry was carrying around 50 passengers along with vehicles when it lost direction due to severely reduced visibility. Search and rescue operations were hampered by persistent fog, and the victim’s belongings were later recovered from the lake.

In response, the district administration issued an “Extremely Urgent” advisory, directing the suspension of all water transport services, including passenger ferries, motorboats, cargo vessels, and floating platforms. Local officials and police have been instructed to monitor ferry ghats closely and prevent unauthorized movement.

Block Development Officers have also been directed to make public announcements through loudspeakers to inform residents and commuters about the restrictions. Officials warned that strict action would be taken against violators, and the suspension will remain in effect until visibility improves and further orders are issued.
