Sub-Collector Tulsi Das Markam was suspended on Saturday for allegedly watching an obscene dance performance by popular Jatra artist Nisha Maharana during the Banadurga Jatra in Chhattisgarh, where he was reportedly seated in the front row near the stage. The suspension follows a viral video of the performance that sparked widespread criticism.
Following the incident, Gariabandh District Collector ordered a detailed probe. Earlier, 14 event organisers were arrested, and three police personnel who were allegedly enjoying the performance were suspended. Authorities stressed strict action against officials who neglect duty or engage in inappropriate behaviour at public events.
The performance took place on the 9th of last month, and the video’s circulation prompted administrative intervention to ensure accountability. The action against the sub-collector and police personnel highlights the administration’s zero-tolerance approach toward misconduct by public officials and the need to maintain decorum during public events.
Meanwhile, Nisha Maharana has sought anticipatory bail from the Orissa High Court after a complaint was filed against her for the obscene dance. She claimed that she performed the act at the insistence of the event organisers. Investigations are ongoing to determine if further action is required.
