South Africa have announced their15-man squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, making some bold selection calls by droppingTristan StubbsandRyan Rickelton. The team will be led byAiden Markramat the global tournament, scheduled to be held inIndia and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
The Proteas selectors have opted for a blend of experience and emerging talent, withQuinton de Kockreturning to the international setup after coming out of retirement. Fast bowlerAnrich Nortjealso makes his comeback following recovery from injury.
The pace attack has been further strengthened by the return ofKagiso Rabada, who missed South Africa’s recent white-ball tour of India due to a rib injury. He will be supported byLungi Ngidi,Marco Jansen, andCorbin Bosch.
Stubbs’ exclusion has drawn attention, given his recent rise in South Africa’s white-ball plans. His omission, along with Rickelton’s, suggests the selectors are prioritising a different team balance forsubcontinent conditions. Players such as Reeza Hendricks, Ottneil Baartman and Lutho Sipamla have also missed out.
Explaining the selections, Proteas men’s convenor selectorPatrick Moroneysaid the panel had taken tough decisions to assemble the strongest possible group for the conditions in India and Sri Lanka. He emphasised the mix of experienced campaigners and young T20 talent.
Several players have receivedtheir maiden T20 World Cup call-ups, includingDewald Brevis,Tony de Zorzi,Donovan Ferreira,George Linde,Kwena Maphaka, andJason Smith. Smith earned his place following impressive domestic performances, including explosive knocks in South Africa’s domestic T20 competitions.
South Africa have been placed inGroup Dalongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada and the UAE. They will begin their campaign againstCanada in Ahmedabad on February 9.
Still in search of their first men’s T20 World Cup title, the Proteas will look to build on theirrunner-up finish in the previous edition, where they narrowly lost to India. Head coachShukri Conradbelieves the team’s recent exposure to subcontinent conditions will prove valuable during the tournament.
