Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has emphasized that India’s chances of defending their T20 World Cup title at home will largely depend on Varun Chakravarthy’s performance, highlighting the importance of the team’s spin-heavy attack.
Speaking to PTI, Ganguly stressed that home conditions place a premium on quality spin bowling, something India are well-equipped with. “India has a strong spin attack, and if Chakravarthy is fit, it’s a big boost for the team,” he said, underlining both the expectations and opportunities of hosting the tournament.
India’s spin quartet for the World Cup—Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar—will play a pivotal role as matches are set to be played across India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Chakravarthy, in particular, stands out as a key weapon, having taken 51 wickets in 32 T20Is and performing impressively against South Africa, picking six wickets in a five-match series. His ability to deceive batters in the middle overs makes him central to India’s plans, especially in high-pressure knockout games.
As India prepare for their final T20I series against New Zealand starting January 21, Chakravarthy’s form is a key talking point. With depth in spin and favorable home conditions, India head into the tournament as strong contenders, with Ganguly suggesting that the spinners, led by Chakravarthy, could make the difference on the biggest stage.
