Hockey India on Friday announced the appointment of Sjoerd Marijne as the chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team. The Dutch coach returns to the Indian setup following a historic performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where the team finished fourth in only their second appearance at the Olympics in over 36 years.
Marijne will be supported by Matias Vila as the analytical coach. Vila, a former midfielder from Argentina, made his international debut in 1997 and represented his country at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics. He has been actively involved in coaching for more than two decades.
Joining the coaching setup is Dr. Wayne Lombard as Scientific Advisor and Head of Athletic Performance, supported by Rodet Yila and Ciara Yila, both serving as Scientific Advisors.
Reflecting on his return to India, Marijne, who previously led the Indian Women's Team from 2017 to 2021—helping them rise into the world top 10—said, “It’s great to be back. After 4.5 years, I return with fresh energy and a clear vision to support the team’s growth and help the players achieve their full potential on the world stage.”
Marijne’s first major assignment as chief coach will be the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, scheduled from 8th to 14th March 2026. He is set to arrive in India on 14th January, with the National Coaching Camp beginning on 19th January at SAI, Bengaluru.
