India batterShreyas Iyerhas moved closer to an international comeback after beingcleared to play for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from injury. The 30-year-old is set to feature in Mumbai’s next Vijay Hazare fixture onJanuary 6, a match that could prove crucial for his national selection prospects.
Sources have confirmed that Iyersuccessfully completed his first 50-over return-to-play (RTP) match simulation on January 2, 2026. The upcoming Mumbai match againstHimachal Pradeshwill act as hissecond RTP fixture, as mandated by theBoard of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)clearance protocol. Only after completing both simulations without discomfort will he be deemed fully fit for white-ball selection.
However, the timing remains tight. The BCCI is expected to announceIndia’s ODI squad for the three-match series against New Zealandas early asJanuary 3, meaning selectors may have to decide whether to wait for Iyer’s Vijay Hazare outing or opt for players already match-ready.
As part of his rehabilitation, Iyer reported to theBCCI Centre of Excellence in BengaluruonDecember 25, entering the final phase of his recovery. Since then, he has shown steady progress, completing multiple high-intensity batting and fielding sessions before being cleared for match simulation.
Iyer has been sidelined sinceOctober 25, when he suffered a serious injury during India’s third ODI againstAustralia. A heavy fall near the boundary resulted in internal bleeding and spleen damage, ruling him out of action for several weeks. He subsequently missed the home ODI series against South Africa and theSyed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
During his absence, India have explored alternatives, withRuturaj Gaikwadimpressing in the ODI series against South Africa, strengthening competition for middle-order slots.
While Iyer’s fitness comeback appears on track, his return to the international side may depend as much ontiming and selector strategyas on form. With India shaping their white-ball core ahead of the2027 ODI World Cup, the Vijay Hazare appearance could determine whether Iyer makes an immediate return for the New Zealand tour or is asked to wait a little longer.
