Sankranthi is more than just a festival in South India—it is the most crucial theatrical season for Telugu and Tamil cinema. Family audiences return to theatres in large numbers, repeat viewings rise, and even modest films often benefit from festive momentum. Unsurprisingly, Sankranthi 2026 is already shaping up as a high-voltage box-office battle, with six films announcing release dates across the key holiday window.

Here’s a closer look at the confirmed Sankranthi 2026 releases and what’s at stake for each:

The Raja Saab – January 9

Starring Prabhas, The Raja Saab is among the most anticipated Sankranthi releases. Directed by Maruthi, the film blends horror, fantasy, and comedy, a genre that has recently found pan-India acceptance.

After multiple delays, the trailer has revived buzz. With Prabhas’ nationwide reach and reports of paid premieres on January 8, the film could kick off Sankranthi celebrations early if word of mouth clicks.

Jana Nayagan – January 9

Releasing on the same day is Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay. Widely believed to be Vijay’s final theatrical release before his full-time political entry, the film carries historic significance.

Regardless of genre or reviews, Vijay’s pull across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, overseas markets, and even Telugu states is massive. Even average word of mouth is expected to translate into strong festive collections.

Manashankara Varaprasad Garu – January 12

This Chiranjeevi and Nayanthara starrer is directed by Anil Ravipudi, known for delivering successful family entertainers during festive seasons.

Positioned as a full-fledged Sankranthi film, it marks Chiranjeevi’s return to a family-centric entertainer after a quieter phase. If comedy and emotions land well, this could emerge as one of the biggest winners of the season.

Bharta Mahasayulu Vignapthi – January 13

Starring Ravi Teja, alongside Dimple Hayathi and Ashika Ranganath, this family comedy-drama is directed by Kishore Tirumala.

While the teaser response was mixed, Sankranthi audiences have historically favoured light-hearted family films. If it taps into vintage Ravi Teja humour, the festive mood could work in its favour.

Anaganaga Oka Raju – January 14

Featuring Naveen Polishetty, Anaganaga Oka Raju is a comedy entertainer set in a Godavari backdrop and directed by debutant Maari.

Despite competing with larger star films, Sankranthi has often allowed mid-budget films to thrive if content clicks. Naveen’s strong comic recall after Jathi Ratnalu gives this film a solid chance to carve out space.

Nari Nari Naduma Murari – January 15

Starring Sharwanand and directed by Ram Abbaraju, this long-delayed project enters a crowded release window.

While screen availability may be a challenge, Sharwanand has tasted Sankranthi success before with Shatamanam Bhavati. If the content connects, the film could still surprise.
