External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to brief the Lok Sabha on Monday about the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East as Parliament reconvenes for the second phase of the Budget Session.
The minister’s statement was included in the revised agenda circulated for the day’s proceedings. The briefing comes at a time when hostilities in the region have intensified, particularly involving the United States, Israel and Iran, raising global security concerns and drawing attention in Parliament.
The development has also triggered political reactions ahead of the session. Opposition parties have demanded a detailed debate on the conflict and its implications for India rather than a brief ministerial statement.
Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said the opposition would prefer a full-fledged discussion in Parliament, arguing that ministerial statements generally do not allow members to ask questions or seek clarifications.
The second leg of the Budget Session began on Monday, with Parliament expected to take up several key issues. Earlier, the Lok Sabha agenda for the day also included an opposition-backed resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has said it is closely monitoring developments in West Asia, especially considering the safety of Indian nationals living in the region and the potential economic implications. Thousands of Indians have already returned home after disruptions caused by the conflict.
