New Delhi: Marking International Women’s Day, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a significant step towards promoting gender inclusivity by deploying more than 5,100 women employees at toll plazas across India during day shifts.
According to officials, women staff members have been positioned at over 1,140 toll plazas on the National Highway and Expressway network. The initiative aims to strengthen women's participation in operational roles while also creating a more efficient and user-friendly environment for highway commuters.
NHAI stated that the presence of women at toll booths is expected to bring a more courteous and empathetic approach to toll operations. Officials also believe that it may help reduce conflicts and disputes that sometimes arise during toll fee collection.
The decision to increase the number of women employees at toll plazas was taken after extensive consultations with stakeholders in the highway infrastructure sector. These discussions involved toll plaza operators and major industry bodies, including the National Highways Builder Federation (NHBF), the Highway Operators Association of India (HOAI), and the All India User Fee Contractors Federation (AIUCF).
All stakeholders have agreed to support the initiative by deploying female staff members during daytime toll operations. Authorities expect the number of women working at toll plazas to grow further in the coming months.
To ensure smooth implementation, NHAI will closely monitor operations at toll plazas across the country. Special training programmes will also be conducted for women employees, particularly those from rural areas.
The training will focus on professional conduct with highway users, emergency response handling, safety protocols, and efficient toll management practices.
Officials added that the initiative will create new employment opportunities for women, especially in rural and semi-urban regions. By encouraging women to participate in frontline infrastructure roles, NHAI aims to strengthen gender equality while also improving service quality across India’s National Highway network.
