Serious questions are being raised over the controversial Haldiapadar rail overbridge in Berhampur, as allegations emerge that design changes made during its construction may have contributed to the deaths of more than 20 people since its inauguration.
The overbridge, intended to ease traffic congestion and enhance public safety, has instead become a site of repeated fatal accidents. The recurring tragedies have sparked widespread public outrage, with citizens questioning whether the project was executed in the interest of public welfare or tailored to serve private and political interests.
Amid growing criticism, the Odisha State Government has taken note of the situation. A high-level technical team is scheduled to inspect the Haldiapadar overbridge on February 16. The inspection will include a detailed review of construction methods, structural safety measures, and, crucially, the original design and engineering drawings.
Adding to the controversy are serious allegations that the bridge’s alignment was altered during construction under the previous regime. Critics claim the design was modified to allow the bridge to pass over land owned by influential political leaders, builders, and powerful individuals, allegedly enabling them to reap significant financial gains.
Since its inauguration, the overbridge has reportedly witnessed frequent accidents, raising concerns about whether design flaws, negligence, or systemic failure are responsible for the mounting loss of lives.
