Once celebrated as a landmark cultural and spiritual destination,Vyasa Sarovarin Jajpur district is now facing neglect, barely months after its inauguration. The ambitious project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, was designed to showcase the region’s mythological heritage and promote tourism. However, the absence of regular maintenance has begun to erode its charm.
Spread across 294 acres and developed at a cost of ₹60 crore under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), the site was envisioned as a major attraction highlighting episodes from theMahabharata. Sculptures depicting Lord Krishna’s Vishwaroop, Bhishma on the bed of arrows, the Chakravyuha, and other legendary moments were installed to offer visitors a rich cultural experience.
Neglect Overshadows Grand Vision
Despite its grand vision, the current condition of the site tells a different story. Several sculptures show signs of damage, landscaped areas are overgrown with weeds, and basic maintenance appears to be lacking. Decorative structures have faded, and pathways remain poorly maintained, diminishing the overall visitor experience.
Visitors have also raised concerns about the lack of basic amenities such as clean toilets, drinking water facilities, and adequate lighting. As dusk falls, large sections of the complex are left in darkness, discouraging visitors and raising safety concerns.
“Vyasa Sarovar has immense cultural value. It attracts people from far and wide, but the lack of upkeep is disappointing,” said a visitor. “There are no proper facilities, and the place feels neglected despite its importance.”
Call for Immediate Intervention
Locals and heritage enthusiasts have urged the authorities to intervene and restore the site to its intended glory. Many believe the project has immense tourism potential if properly maintained and promoted.
Confirming ongoing discussions, Jajpur Collector Ambar Kumar Kar stated that high-level meetings are underway to address the issues. “Major projects, including Vyasa Sarovar and the adjacent nature park, are under review. Steps are being taken to ensure their completion and proper maintenance,” he said.
Residents and visitors alike are now hoping for swift action, fearing that without timely intervention, one of Jajpur’s most ambitious cultural projects may fade into neglect.
