Indian brokerage firms operate under strict regulatory limits that cap the growth of any single broker. Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath explained why stockbroking businesses cannot expand indefinitely, even when investor demand is strong.
Kamath highlighted on X that broking is unique because there’s a “hard ceiling” on how much and how quickly a firm can grow. Many investors are unaware that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has imposed a 15% open interest cap at the broker level in the derivatives market. This means no broker can hold more than 15% of the total market open interest at any given time, a rule designed to reduce systemic risk and prevent excessive market concentration.
Kamath noted that while concentration can boost business growth, it can ultimately harm consumers. By limiting a broker’s share, SEBI promotes balance, competition, and stability in the financial system. He compared this to the 33% market share cap NPCI proposed for UPI apps, though that limit was never fully implemented.
Growth for brokers, Kamath explained, depends on the overall market expanding—individual firms can only grow if the market as a whole grows. This framework encourages healthy competition and ensures fair opportunities for all players.
For investors, these regulations help minimize risk, maintain competition, and prevent any single broker from dominating the market.
