Missing the revised ITR filing deadline—usually December 31 of the assessment year—can cause concern, especially for taxpayers expecting a refund. However, the impact depends on whether a return was filed earlier.
If you have already filed your original or belated ITR within the permitted time, missing the revised return deadline does not affect your refund. The Income Tax Department can still process the return and issue the refund after verification.
Problems arise for taxpayers who did not file any return at all before the revised window closed. In such cases, the only option left is filing an Updated Return (ITR-U). Under current rules, refunds cannot be claimed through ITR-U—it can only be used to disclose additional income and pay extra tax. This means excess TDS or advance tax cannot be recovered.
Refunds for valid, filed returns are usually issued within a few weeks to a few months. Delays may occur due to:
Mismatch in TDS details
Bank account verification issues
Returns selected for scrutiny
The tax department has up to nine months from the end of the financial year to process refunds, after which interest becomes payable on delays.
There is no separate penalty for missing only the revised ITR deadline. Penalties apply when original or belated returns are filed late. Missing the revised window mainly removes the chance to correct errors, add missed income, or claim deductions, which may affect refunds or tax liability.
As clarified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), taxpayers who wrongly claimed Section 87A rebate on special-rate income but clear dues by December 31, 2025, will not face penal interest under Section 220(2).
If a valid return was filed on time, your refund remains safe. But if all filing windows were missed, the right to claim a refund is usually lost.
