ForFY 2025–26 (Assessment Year 2026–27), most individual taxpayers must file their Income Tax Return (ITR) byJuly 31, 2026. Filing on time not only avoids penalties but also protects your financial flexibility.

If you miss this deadline, your return becomes abelated return. You can still file it, but only untilDecember 31, 2026(unless extended). However, several costs and restrictions apply.

 Late filing fee

UnderSection 234F, a mandatory penalty is charged:

• Up to ₹1,000if total income isbelow ₹5 lakh

• Up to ₹5,000if income isabove ₹5 lakh

This fee applies even if you have already paid all your taxes.

 Interest on unpaid tax

If any tax remains unpaid after July 31,interest at 1% per monthis charged underSection 234Auntil payment is made — increasing your total tax outgo.

 Delayed refunds

If you are due a refund, it willnot be cancelled, butbelated returns are processed later, meaning you may have to wait much longer for your money.

 Loss of tax benefits

Late filing blocks thecarry-forward of business losses and capital losses, which can increase your tax burden in future years.

You can revise a belated return only untilDecember 31, 2026. After that, errors cannot be corrected easily.

 Miss December too?

If you miss even the December deadline, your only option isITR-U (Updated Return), which comes withextra tax and penalties, andrefunds cannot be claimed.

 Impact on financial credibility

Banks, visa authorities and lenders check ITRs for loans, credit cards and visa applications.Late or missing returns weaken your financial profile, even if taxes are eventually paid.
