Chidambaram, the director of the Malayalam hit filmManjummel Boys, has been granted anticipatory bail by the District and Sessions Court in Ernakulam on March 7 in connection with a sexual harassment case. The complaint relates to an alleged incident that took place in May 2022 at an apartment in Kochi.
The case was registered by the Ernakulam South Police Station on February 28 based on the statement of a woman actor who accused the filmmaker of misbehaving with her during a meeting connected to a film project. Following the complaint, authorities charged Chidambaram underSection 74 (outraging the modesty of a woman)andSection 75 (sexual harassment)of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Chidambaram filed an anticipatory bail application on March 3, and the court reserved its order after hearing arguments from both sides. While granting bail, the court imposed conditions requiring the filmmaker to cooperate fully with the investigation, refrain from tampering with evidence, and avoid influencing witnesses.
In his petition, Chidambaram stated that he met the complainant during the production ofManjummel Boyswhen she was being considered for a role. He maintained that his conduct was professional and alleged that the complainant had initiated a campaign to damage his reputation.
He also claimed that the complainant posted a reel on Instagram accusing him of sexual assault, following which he filed a defamation suit in the Bombay High Court. The court had earlier issued an interim order in December 2025 restraining her from publishing defamatory content against him.
While granting anticipatory bail, the Ernakulam court noted that the alleged incident occurred in 2022 and highlighted the four-year delay in filing the complaint. It also observed that the director had no prior criminal record and that custodial interrogation was not necessary at this stage. The court has directed Chidambaram to cooperate with police during the ongoing investigation.
