Kanpur Health Department Seals 22 Nursing Homes After Newborn Dies in ICU Fire

Kanpur authorities sealed 22 nursing homes after inspections revealed major violations, including unauthorized ICU operations. The action followed the death of a newborn in an ICU fire at Raja Nursing Home.

The Kanpur health department conducted a large-scale inspection drive after a newborn died in a fire incident at Raja Nursing Home’s intensive care unit on February 8. Acting under the direction of the District Magistrate, officials inspected 27 nursing homes in western Kanpur.

During the inspections, serious violations were found in 22 facilities, including ICUs operating without required permissions and failure to meet safety standards. All 22 nursing homes were sealed, and their operators were asked to submit explanations within three days. Police were present throughout the operation to maintain order.

Authorities also registered a case against the doctor and staff of Raja Nursing Home. The ICU at the facility was reportedly functioning without approval and has now been sealed. Further legal action will depend on the medical board’s investigation report. Officials confirmed that similar inspection drives will continue in other parts of the city.
