India’s tax filings are quietly telling a powerful story about an economy in transition. According to the How India Filed in 2025 report by ClearTax, the traditional model of relying on a single salaried income is steadily giving way to a diversified, multi-income approach.
The rise of the “Hybrid Indian” taxpayer stands out as the defining trend. Individuals are increasingly earning through a mix of salaries, freelancing, business income, capital gains, stock trading and online platforms. This shift is reflected in filing patterns:

ITR-3 filings, used for business and trading income, surged 45.4% in 2025

ITR-2 filings, linked to capital gains and investments, rose 17% year-on-year
Millennials aged 25–35 are driving this transformation. They account for over 42% of ITR-3 filings, making them the largest group of traders and business-income taxpayers. Comfortable with digital tools and more open to financial risk, this generation is actively building wealth beyond fixed monthly salaries.
Even more striking is the early entry of Gen Z into the investment ecosystem. Among taxpayers under 25, ITR-2 filings grew 18%, suggesting that investing and capital gains are becoming part of financial life far earlier than in previous generations.
Crypto assets, while still niche, are also finding a place in diversified portfolios. Most crypto taxpayers treat digital assets as an additional income stream rather than a primary bet, often clubbing them with trading or business income.
The data also highlights a lifecycle pattern in earnings. Indians in the 40–50 age bracket emerge as peak earners, with over 38% of salaried taxpayers in this group earning more than ₹30 lakh annually—often backed by years of accumulated investments.
Taken together, India’s 2025 tax filings reveal an economy that is becoming more market-linked, entrepreneurial and financially aware. The shift away from single-source income reflects not just changing opportunities, but a changing mindset—one that values flexibility, diversification and long-term wealth creation.
