Martyn, 54, was admitted to a hospital on Australia’s Gold Coast on December 26 after being diagnosed with meningitis, a serious infection that affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. His condition worsened rapidly, forcing doctors to place him in an induced coma in intensive care as he fought for his life.
After several critical days, Martyn woke from the coma last week and began responding and speaking, bringing huge relief to his family and the cricketing community. He has now been discharged and is continuing his recovery at home.
Confirming the update during commentary on the Ashes broadcast, Gilchrist said Martyn’s family were deeply grateful for the support they received.
“It’s terrific and wonderful to know he’s back home, and his family express their gratitude and thanks for all the support,” Gilchrist said, adding that ambulance officers acted flawlessly and helped stop the infection early.
Mark Waugh echoed those sentiments, underlining how serious the situation had been.
“It’s almost a miracle, really. He was looking in really bad shape when he was in the ICU,” Waugh said.
Martyn was a key figure in one of Australia’s most dominant cricketing eras. He represented Australia in 67 Tests and 208 ODIs, playing crucial roles in World Cup triumphs in 1999 and 2003.
He also finished as the leading run-scorer in Australia’s Champions Trophy 2006 win and was the highest run-getter in Australia’s historic 2–1 Test series victory in India, scoring 444 runs.
While doctors say Martyn still has a recovery journey ahead, his discharge from hospital marks a major milestone after a terrifying medical emergency. The former cricketer’s comeback from critical illness has been widely celebrated across the cricket world as a powerful reminder of timely medical care and resilience.
