Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie has thrown his support behind veteran seamer Peter Siddle, suggesting he could be considered as a backup option for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
Siddle last played international cricket for Australia in 2019, featuring in the fifth Test of the Ashes series at The Oval. His most recent T20I appearance dates back to 2010 against Sri Lanka in Perth. Despite the long gap, Gillespie believes Siddle’s current form makes him a viable short-term option, particularly if injuries disrupt Australia’s pace plans.
Reacting to a post on X praising Siddle’s performances, Gillespie said that T20 cricket allows for “here and now” thinking and that experience can outweigh long-term planning in the shortest format. He suggested Siddle could be a sensible choice if any frontline fast bowler gets injured ahead of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
Siddle is currently enjoying a remarkable run in the Big Bash League 2025–26, where the 41-year-old is representing the Melbourne Stars. He is the joint-highest wicket-taker so far, having taken 10 wickets from five innings at an average of 13.60 and an economy rate of 6.80, underlining his effectiveness even at this stage of his career.
In his overall T20 career, Siddle has picked up 163 wickets in 136 innings, including two five-wicket hauls. He has played just two T20 Internationals for Australia, taking three wickets.
With leading pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood racing to regain full fitness ahead of the World Cup, Australia may be forced to explore contingency options. While a full-fledged comeback for Siddle still appears unlikely due to his age and extended absence from international cricket, Gillespie’s comments highlight that the door may not be completely shut.
