Winter Break 2026: Schools in these states remain closed until January 6

Due to severe cold and heavy fog, several districts in Uttar Pradesh have decided to keep schools for students up to Class 8 closed, with some areas extending the break until January 14. In the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, local authorities have also suspended school activities to ensure student safety amid low visibility and freezing temperatures."

Schools Closed Across India as Severe Cold Wave Persists

While some schools reopened on January 5, many institutions across multiple states and cities remain closed due to harsh cold wave conditions, disrupting academic schedules and prompting precautionary measures from state and district authorities.

InJharkhand, schools in Ranchi and Jamshedpur will stay closed until January 6, affecting students from kindergarten through Class 12. The decision follows a special bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, warning of severe cold and cold wave conditions. Ranchi has been placed under a yellow alert until further notice. According to an official directive under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), all government, private, and non-government schools in the two districts will suspend classes until January 6. However, schools have the option to conduct any examinations scheduled during this period, and classes for Class 10 and 12 students may be held at the discretion of school authorities. Teachers are required to report for non-academic work and mark attendance on the eVV system before reopening.

InUttar Pradesh, schools for students up to Class 8 remain closed in several districts due to cold wave and dense fog conditions, with some areas extending closures until January 14. District administrations in the National Capital Region, including Noida and Ghaziabad, have also announced temporary closures to ensure student safety amid low visibility and dropping temperatures.

Biharhas seen similar closures across multiple districts, especially in the early morning hours when temperatures are lowest. Authorities have urged schools to follow local district advisories and weather updates before resuming classes.

In theNortheast, the Assam government has ordered the closure of all schools until January 6 due to the continuing cold wave, affecting students in both government and private institutions.

InDelhi, schools are mostly on scheduled winter vacations, though authorities may consider extending breaks if cold and fog conditions continue. Other states, includingPunjab, Haryana, and Jammu & Kashmir, are also experiencing extended winter breaks or weather-related school closures.

Education departments across the country have asked parents and students to regularly monitor official notifications from district administrations and school authorities, as reopening dates may vary depending on local weather conditions. Officials emphasize that these temporary closures are precautionary measures intended to protect students amid extreme winter conditions.
