DMK MP and party Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi on Thursday accused the Centre of imposing Hindi in Tamil Nadu, sharing a photograph of a Chennai railway station nameboard that she claimed had been altered from English to Hindi.

Posting on X, Kanimozhi said, “It started in Kallakudi and continues to Chennai Park. They are not going to stop imposing it, and we are not going to stop opposing it.” Along with the post, she shared an image of the Park Town suburban railway station signboard near Chennai’s MGR Central, objecting to what she described as the replacement of predominantly English signage with Hindi.

Her remarks come amid renewed tensions between the DMK and the Union government over language policy. The party has repeatedly accused the Centre of pushing Hindi in non-Hindi-speaking states through administrative decisions and education-related policies.

Recently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin reiterated that there was “no place” for Hindi in the state. Speaking on Language Martyrs’ Day, Stalin recalled Tamil Nadu’s historic resistance to Hindi imposition and paid tribute to those who lost their lives opposing it.

Tamil Nadu follows a two-language formula comprising Tamil and English. The DMK has also alleged that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and other administrative measures promote Hindi at the cost of the state’s linguistic autonomy—an accusation the Centre has consistently denied.
