A Pune-based lawyer has filed a formal complaint against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya, accusing him of disrespecting the Indian national flag during celebrations following India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final.
The complaint was submitted by advocate Wajid Khan at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station in Pune. According to the lawyer, Pandya allegedly wrapped the Indian tricolour around himself while celebrating on the field with his girlfriend Mahieka Sharma after India defeated New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Speaking to ANI, Khan claimed the act violated provisions under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which requires citizens to maintain the dignity and respect of the national flag. He alleged that Pandya was seen dancing and lying down with the flag wrapped around him during the celebrations.
Videos from the victory celebrations quickly went viral on social media, showing emotional scenes as Indian players celebrated the historic win. In several clips, Pandya and Mahieka Sharma were seen dancing, posing with the trophy and sharing celebratory moments on the podium while teammates and staff celebrated around them.
While many fans viewed the scenes as harmless celebrations following a major sporting victory, others questioned whether the national flag was used appropriately during the festivities.
